MMXXI
Our first dinner post COVID – more or less – was a well-attended affair at the Wrexham Ramada Hotel, where the staff made us very welcome. The guest speaker that night was Edwin Hughes, who entered the school in 1957 leaving after four years to attend a much less prestigious institution: St Asaph Grammar School.
On leaving school he took up farming on the family farm near Flint. Not finding enough to occupy his time as he served as a magistrate and was invited to become a member of the Lord Chancellor’s Committee reviewing legislation in Wales. After retiring he decided to collect farm tractors and now has a collection of over eighty – he’s not sure of the actual number. (Obviously he failed Special Arithmetic – Ed).
Belated prizes were presented to Denis Harris winner of the 2020 acronym competition and Terry Smith winner of the 2020 limerick competition. Thomas Charles Jones our Guest Speaker (newsletter only) was presented with his certificate by our retiring Chairman, Huw Roberts.
The 2021 limerick winner was Stephen Wright (Treasurer – we have to keep him happy) and the acronym winner was Mike Jarvis.
Your secretary, Gareth Davies, was honoured by a general acclamation to be Old Boy of the Year 2021 – an honour which he accepted with pleasure and delight.
In 2021 the Association celebrated 40 years since its formal foundation in 1981 and the Toast to the Association was given by Huw Roberts who gave an excellent account of the Association and the reply was given by Gareth Davies who shared his memories of past dinners and guest speakers, playing particular tribute to our founders, of which only one remained, Clive Roberts, our Honorary Life President and Old Boy of the Year 2020.
